South Australia voted best in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere, 3rd best in World in our reserve category, 10th best in World for attractiveness for exploration and development investment in Fraser Institute Global Petroleum Survey 2017.

The 11th Fraser Institute Global Petroleum Survey was released on 29 November 2017.

South Australia was ranked:

  • best oil and gas jurisdiction in Australia;
  • best oil and gas jurisdiction its Oceania region;
  • best oil and gas jurisdiction in the southern hemisphere;
  • 3rd best in world in South Australia’s reserve category; and
  • 10th best in world for attractiveness (policy perception index) for investment for exploration and development.

South Australia’s global ranking in the top-10 Policy Perception Index values, is up from 12th in 2015.

Only jurisdictions in the USA (states), Canada (provinces) and Norway (offshore outside the North Sea) are ranked higher than South Australia in the Policy Perception Index. The next ranked Australian jurisdiction was the Western Australia at 33 and the Northern Territory at 34.

South Australia ranked 3rd of the 39 jurisdictions in its reserve category, up from 8th in 2015. Top five small reserve holder jurisdictions are:

  1. Kansas
  2. Sakatchewan
  3. South Australia
  4. Manitoba
  5. New Zealand
    * (18 Western Australia - highest ranked Australian jurisdiction after SA).

South Australia ranked in the top 20 globally for these criteria:

  • Legal system processes – 9th
  • Fiscal terms - 14th
  • Geological databases - 15th (note: Australia offshore and WA ranked higher)
  • Lack of regulatory duplication and inconsistencies – 16th
  • Low cost of regulatory compliance – 17th
  • Taxation in general  - 18th
  • Certainty concerning the administration, interpretation and enforcement of regulations - 18th
  • Security - equal first with 26 other jurisdictions

The 2017 Survey results confirm that South Australia has consistently (in the term 2010-17) delivered better policies for petroleum than all other Australian jurisdiction, as perceived by industry.
